AIG Appoints Adam Clifford As Chief Executive Officer

American International Group (AIG) has appointed Adam Clifford as chief executive officer of international commercial insurance, effective January 5, 2026.

Based in London, Clifford will report to Jon Hancock, chief executive officer of general insurance, and will join the AIG General Insurance executive leadership team.

In his new role, Clifford will be responsible for overseeing AIG’s international commercial insurance operations across multiple regions and product lines. The portfolio includes specialty and multinational business written through various AIG platforms.

Clifford brings nearly three decades of global insurance leadership experience to the role. He joins AIG from Everest Insurance, where he served as senior vice president and head of international retail insurance, leading retail operations across the UK, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Prior to Everest, Clifford held a number of senior leadership positions at Chubb, including managing director of Chubb European Group. Earlier in his career, he also led underwriting teams in London and Singapore during a previous tenure at AIG.

Commenting on the appointment, AIG said Clifford’s more than 30 years of global operating experience, combined with his seven-year tenure at AIG, will bring deep industry expertise and a strong global perspective to the international commercial role.

The appointment comes amid improved performance in AIG’s General Insurance division. In the third quarter of 2025, the combined ratio improved by 580 basis points to 86.8%, while the accident year combined ratio, as adjusted, stood at 88.3%.

Earlier this year, AIG reported a net profit of US$1.1 billion for the second quarter, compared with a net loss of US$4 billion in the same period a year earlier.
