AXIS Capital has announced the appointment of Matthew Kirk as its next chief financial officer (CFO), effective March 2026, as part of a structured succession plan.
Kirk will succeed current CFO Peter J. Vogt, who will transition to the role of strategic advisor until the end of 2026 to ensure a smooth handover.
Currently serving as CFO of Enstar Group Limited, Kirk brings nearly three decades of experience in insurance, finance, and accounting, with deep expertise in the property and casualty sector. He will join AXIS in the fourth quarter of 2025 as an advisor before formally assuming the CFO role.
At Enstar, where he has been CFO since March 2023, Kirk has led global finance operations. Previously, he was group treasurer, overseeing treasury, capital management, and investor relations. His earlier career includes senior leadership roles at Sirius International Insurance Group, where he served as group treasurer and as president and managing director of Sirius Investment Advisors.
Kirk began his career at Arthur Andersen as an assurance and business advisory manager. A certified public accountant (inactive), he holds an MBA from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware. Based in New York, he will report directly to President and CEO Vince Tizzio and join the company’s executive committee.
The appointment follows a period of strong performance for AXIS. In the second quarter, the company reported net income of US$216 million, up from US$204 million a year earlier, and operating income of US$261 million. Gross premiums written rose 3% to US$2.5 billion, driven by a 7% increase in the insurance segment, partly offset by a 7% decline in reinsurance.
Earlier this year, AXIS implemented strategic leadership changes within its global markets division to enhance underwriting coordination and foster greater collaboration across specialty lines. The restructuring introduced new oversight roles for delegated authority business, including managing general agents and coverholders, alongside the creation of a dedicated transformation leadership position.
