Hiscox has appointed Matthew Budd to the newly created role of group head of technical claims, strengthening the specialist insurer’s capabilities in managing complex and high-value claims across multiple lines of business.
Based in London and reporting to group claims director Steve Parry, Budd brings over 30 years of claims management expertise. He joins from AIG, where he led the company’s aerospace claims operations, and previously held senior roles at Talbot Underwriting, including head of claims and head of wordings, contracts, and delegated authorities. Earlier in his career, he served as aviation claims manager at XL London Market.
In his new position, Budd will lead Hiscox’s technical claims operations as the group advances its growth strategy and develops innovative claims solutions for clients.
The appointment comes as insurers increasingly focus on specialist claims leadership to navigate a complex risk environment marked by higher loss severity, cross-border exposures, and evolving litigation trends. For global specialty carriers, strong claims expertise is now a key competitive advantage—especially in sectors such as aviation, energy, marine, and financial lines, where the quality and speed of claims handling can be as critical as coverage or pricing.
By enhancing senior technical leadership, insurers aim to provide market-leading service, support tailored risk solutions, and strengthen long-term client relationships in a competitive, capacity-constrained market.
In recent months, several leading specialty insurers have established or expanded senior technical claims positions, particularly in London, as part of their growth strategies and to better manage the increasing complexity of claims.
Allianz UK has appointed Matt Cox as chief claims officer, effective 3 February. Also in February, HDI Global UK & Ireland named Tom Major as its new chief claims officer. Major joins from Allianz, where he previously led the London Market claims across multiple business lines.
