Liberty Mutual Names New Chief Compliance Officer

Liberty Mutual Insurance has announced the appointment of Nicole Arangio as executive vice president and chief compliance officer (CCO), effective April 1, 2025. Arangio will assume the role following a transition period early in the year, succeeding current CCO Karen Morton, who is set to retire at the end of March 2025.

Arangio Brings Extensive Experience

Currently serving as CCO for Global Risk Solutions and Compliance Enablement, Arangio has been a key figure in overseeing compliance operations across Liberty Mutual’s global footprint. Since joining the company as counsel in 2000, she has held numerous leadership roles within the Global Legal & Compliance division.

Her contributions have included managing financial crimes oversight, spearheading compliance education initiatives, and founding the compliance enablement team. Arangio is also a founding leader and co-executive sponsor of WE@Liberty, the company’s employee resource group focused on empowering women and their allies.

Tim Sweeney, president and CEO of Liberty Mutual, praised Arangio’s expertise and leadership, stating, “Nicole’s deep experience in legal and compliance roles makes her exceptionally well-suited to guide our global compliance efforts into the future.”

Celebrating Karen Morton’s Legacy

Karen Morton, who has served as executive vice president and CCO since 2006, will conclude her nearly 20-year tenure at Liberty Mutual with her retirement in March 2025. Morton joined the company as vice president and assistant general counsel for Employment, Benefits, and Corporate Services before advancing to leadership roles, including deputy general counsel for the Litigation and Coverage Group.

Throughout her career, Morton has led transformative initiatives such as developing a unified global compliance strategy, leveraging data to mitigate risk, and founding the Liberty Legal Academy to support employee development. She also co-sponsored LEADA@Liberty, an employee resource group advocating for employees of African descent and their allies.

Reflecting on her time with the company, Morton expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to Liberty Mutual’s global strategy and foster collaboration.

Sweeney acknowledged Morton’s substantial impact, saying, “Karen’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping our legal and compliance functions. Her dedication to fostering inclusivity and supporting our employee resource groups has left a lasting legacy. I wish her all the best in this next chapter of her life.”

Liberty Mutual’s announcement highlights the company’s commitment to continuity and excellence in its compliance leadership as it prepares for this transition.
