Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM), part of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, has announced the appointment of Niala Butt as Head of Casualty Claims for the UK. Her appointment takes immediate effect.
Based in London, Butt will report to Nik Mahida, Head of Third-Party Claims for the UK and MENA regions. In her new role, she will oversee the UK casualty claims team, with a focus on enhancing value across the insurance claims lifecycle. Her responsibilities include trend analysis, boosting operational efficiency, and fostering engagement with stakeholders—including direct collaboration with insured clients.
Butt brings more than 28 years of insurance experience to the role, having held diverse positions across liability and property underwriting, medical malpractice, claims operations, and international risk. Prior to joining LSM, she served as Casualty Claims Manager at CNA Hardy. She is also well known for her contributions to market-wide initiatives, including her involvement with the Lloyd’s Market Association’s General Liability Committee, leading the Ethnic Women in Insurance Network, and supporting the Chartered Insurance Institute’s efforts around diversity and innovation.
Her appointment comes as LSM undertakes a strategic leadership restructuring across its UK and MENA operations. The company has introduced three new underwriting divisions—Marine & Aviation, Specialty, and Property—to better align with the evolving needs of brokers and clients. Meghan Walker has been appointed to lead the Marine & Aviation division, Mike Burle will head Specialty, while the search for a Property division leader is underway.
LSM has also made structural changes within its Delegated Authority Practice, which continues to be led by Lewis Edwards. As part of this evolution, the firm is launching a new auto-follow segment to support its digital and algorithmic underwriting ambitions.
