Sean McGovern has been appointed chair of the Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) for a three-year term, effective January 1, 2026, succeeding outgoing chair Andrew Brooks.
McGovern currently serves as chief executive officer, UK & Lloyd’s, at AXA XL, where he leads the insurer’s insurance operations across the UK and the Lloyd’s market. He is also a director of AXA XL Underwriting Agencies.
He joined XL Group in 2016 as chief compliance officer and head of regulatory and government affairs, before later being appointed general counsel. Prior to this, McGovern spent more than 20 years at the Lloyd’s of London Corporation, holding a range of senior leadership positions.
McGovern’s appointment comes as the Lloyd’s market enters a period of greater underwriting stability following several years of remediation and performance enhancement. After an extended phase of volatility, Lloyd’s has returned to sustained profitability, underpinned by a renewed emphasis on underwriting discipline, technical excellence and market competitiveness.
McGovern’s chairmanship is expected to strengthen the LMA’s engagement with regulators, the Lloyd’s Corporation and broader market stakeholders, while supporting the association’s continued focus on underwriting standards, operational efficiency and the evolving global risk landscape.
