MAPFRE Names Group Chief Innovation Officer

Global insurer MAPFRE has announced the appointment of Leire Jiménez as the new Group Chief Innovation Officer, effective September 1. In addition to her new role, Jiménez will continue to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of MAPFRE’s assistance business unit, MAWDY.

This appointment comes as MAPFRE Open Innovation, established six years ago, enters a new phase focused on enhancing business development, improving decision-making processes, and ensuring the company remains at the forefront of market trends to better serve its customers.

Jiménez, with two decades of industry experience, is set to lead this next phase. She has previously held significant roles in the UK, France, and Asia and has been the CEO of MAWDY since 2019. She succeeds José Antonio Arias, who will remain as the Group Chief Operational Transformation Officer.

MAPFRE Open Innovation has been instrumental in shaping the company’s strategy by developing new mechanisms and nurturing capabilities and talent. These efforts have aimed to integrate with the insurtech ecosystem and other industry players, providing MAPFRE with valuable external insights.

This leadership change coincides with MAPFRE’s recent earnings report for the first half of the year. The insurer reported a net result of €461.6 million, an increase from last year’s €317 million.

“The significant profit improvement is mainly due to higher contributions from the United States, Spain, and the reinsurance business,” MAPFRE noted in July. “North America has seen a relevant improvement (+€58 million) thanks to the technical measures implemented. Iberia’s results grew by 37%, reaching €168 million.

“MAPFRE RE, which encompasses the reinsurance and Global Risks businesses, posted solid business growth, increasing its results to almost €140 million (+15%). LATAM, led by Brazil, is the highest contributor to the group’s profit with €203 million.”
