Markel has appointed Jim Hinchley as chief retail officer for its specialty division, effective immediately. In his new role, Hinchley will lead Markel’s retail strategy, focusing on expanding its current business and identifying new opportunities within the retail sector.
Hinchley brings over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, with expertise in underwriting, distribution, claims, and operations. Before joining Markel, he served as president of insurance at Fairmatic, where he managed insurance operations for the commercial auto insurtech MGA. His career also includes leadership roles at Farmers and Liberty Mutual.
Hinchley will report to Alex Martin, president of Markel Specialty, and will be based in the company’s Boston office.
Earlier this month, Markel also appointed Stacey Hinton as senior underwriter and head of jewelers block within the specie team with immediate effect. As jewelers block head, Hinton will oversee the growth and profitability of Markel’s international jewelers block portfolio.
Hinton’s responsibilities will include building and sustaining relationships with brokers and clients, as well as collaborating closely with the broader specie team and other divisions to implement the company’s jewelers block underwriting strategy.
Additionally, Markel has made three key hires to expand its international casualty portfolio and enhance its wholesale claims services for brokers. Lauren Percival has joined the company as executive underwriter for general liability. Working alongside general liability head James Murray, Percival will focus on driving sustainable growth and exploring new opportunities for profitable expansion while maintaining high service standards for brokers and their clients.
