Munich Re Names Christa Schwimmer As CEO

Munich Re has announced the appointment of Christa Schwimmer as chief executive for its specialty reinsurance, Lloyd’s, and Bermuda operations, effective January 1.

A seasoned professional with 23 years of experience at Munich Re, Schwimmer previously held the role of senior executive manager for the Lloyd’s and Bermuda businesses.

In her previous position, Schwimmer managed over US$1 billion in premiums across multiple business lines. Her responsibilities included developing Munich Re’s property and casualty reinsurance, cyber insurance, and specialty offerings for clients operating in the Lloyd’s and Bermuda markets.

Schwimmer’s extensive career at Munich Re also includes leadership roles in global account management, corporate client strategies, and treaty underwriting for key regions such as Japan and India.

On her new appointment, Schwimmer expressed her excitement about guiding Munich Re’s North American agriculture business while also leading the company’s global aviation, marine, and contingency teams.

She credited Patrice Michellon for ensuring a smooth leadership transition in the specialty reinsurance division and extended her gratitude to colleagues including Dr. Tanja Dierkes, Lambert Muhr, Markus Spielmann, and Stefan Westner for their support.

Schwimmer will join the leadership team led by Stefan Golling, further strengthening Munich Re’s global executive structure.

This appointment comes as Munich Re focuses on achieving its ambitious financial targets for 2025. The reinsurer aims for an IFRS net profit of €6 billion, supported by strong operational performance across its business units.

The group has projected insurance revenue to climb to €64 billion, with a return on investment exceeding 3% by 2025. In the reinsurance sector, Munich Re anticipates revenue growth to €42 billion and a net profit of €5.1 billion by the same year.
