NewRe Appoints Iris Urban As Chief Underwriting Officer

New Reinsurance Company (NewRe), a subsidiary of Munich Re, has announced the appointment of Iris Urban as chief underwriting officer (CUO) for its non-life business, effective March 1, 2025.

In this new role, Urban will be responsible for shaping underwriting strategy, managing the company’s property and casualty portfolio, and driving optimization initiatives.

Urban brings extensive industry experience, having spent more than 20 years at Munich Re in various leadership positions within underwriting and portfolio management. Most recently, she served as senior executive underwriting P&C and head of property and casualty treaty for the German market.

Her prior roles at Munich Re include head of property treaty underwriting, representative director and regional manager for Japan, and senior underwriter for property treaty Asia-Pacific.

Urban began her career at Munich Re in 2000 as a group trainee, gaining experience with global clients and the North American market. Over the years, she has held multiple underwriting and client management positions in both Munich and Tokyo. She holds a degree in business administration and management from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

Founded in Zurich in 1926, NewRe became a wholly owned subsidiary of Munich Re in 1988. In 2020, the company appointed Dr. Thomas Braune as chief executive officer. Like Urban, Braune previously held leadership roles at Munich Re, where he oversaw life and health reinsurance operations across Europe, Latin America, and parts of the Middle East, managing a premium volume of approximately €3 billion.

NewRe continues to develop innovative solutions aimed at mitigating revenue fluctuations in power generation and enhancing the financial viability of renewable energy projects.

Meanwhile, Munich Re has recently strengthened its underwriting leadership with the appointment of Hanh Nguyen as head of treaty P&C underwriting for Southeast Asia and India.
