Shepherds Friendly Appoints Jonathan Sandell As Incoming CEO

Shepherds Friendly has named Jonathan Sandell as its next chief executive officer, effective at the start of 2026 and subject to regulatory approval. He will succeed Ann-Marie O’Dea, who is stepping down after more than a decade as CEO and nearly 20 years with the society.

Sandell brings over two decades of senior leadership experience in financial services, with a strong background in customer propositions and intermediary partnerships. At Prudential UK and Europe, he managed a £40 billion retail product portfolio and spearheaded the redesign of its pensions and retirement offering. He currently serves as customer and proposition director at Lloyds Banking Group.

His appointment comes as Shepherds Friendly approaches its 200th anniversary and advances the transformation strategy initiated under O’Dea’s leadership. Recent developments include implementing a new technology platform and expanding distribution through intermediary networks, part of a broader push to strengthen its customer base.

O’Dea’s tenure has been marked by significant growth and modernisation, positioning Shepherds Friendly for long-term success.

The appointment also underscores the ongoing relevance of mutual insurers in the UK. Unlike shareholder-owned insurers, mutuals such as Shepherds Friendly, Royal London, and LV= prioritise members’ interests, focusing on long-term stability and customer value. In recent years, the sector has invested in technology and diversified product offerings to stay competitive in an evolving insurance and savings market.

With extensive expertise in pensions, partnerships, and customer strategy, Sandell is expected to play a pivotal role in balancing Shepherds Friendly’s heritage with the demands of a digital-first era. As regulatory pressures, changing distribution models, and shifting consumer expectations continue to shape the industry, his leadership will be closely watched as a marker of how mutuals can adapt and thrive in the modern financial landscape.
