UK P&I Club Joins SEA-LNG, Strengthening Insurance And Risk Expertise

SEA-LNG has confirmed that the UK P&I Club has joined its growing membership, strengthening the coalition’s technical, risk and insurance expertise across the global maritime industry.

Established in 1869, the UK P&I Club is one of the world’s oldest and largest mutual marine insurers, providing protection and indemnity cover to shipowners, operators and charterers worldwide.

As the shipping sector accelerates its decarbonisation efforts, LNG continues to be recognised as a practical solution for reducing emissions today while supporting a transition towards net-zero fuels in the future.

Insurance as a tool to manage LNG operational and regulatory risk

The participation of P&I insurers such as the UK P&I Club is critical to addressing the operational and regulatory complexities associated with LNG as a marine fuel. LNG operations involve a range of risks, including cryogenic exposure, flammable vapour release and fuel system failures. P&I insurance provides an essential financial safeguard, helping shipowners manage potential liabilities while ensuring compliance with international regulatory frameworks.

Beyond risk transfer, insurers play an active role in loss prevention. The UK P&I Club delivers tailored safety and risk management programmes, audits and crew training aimed at reducing incidents and minimising operational disruption. Through its involvement in SEA-LNG, these capabilities will be extended to new and emerging LNG users, supporting the safe adoption of alternative fuel technologies and adherence to environmental regulations.

The UK P&I Club’s decision to join SEA-LNG represents a significant step in strengthening cross-sector collaboration across the maritime industry. Insurers play a critical role in supporting the energy transition by providing the confidence and risk frameworks shipowners need to invest, reinforcing that the operationally proven and safe methane pathway is a practical and realistic solution.

The UK P&I Club has supported members using LNG as a marine fuel for more than 50 years, with a longstanding focus on safe, controlled and well-managed implementation.
