UK Insurance Sector Expands Leadership Teams With Strategic Appointments

A number of senior leadership appointments have been announced across the UK insurance and re/insurance industry, covering broking, carrier operations, trade associations, legal services and marine consultancy businesses.

Covéa appoints chief operating officer

Covéa Insurance has named Stephen Long as chief operating officer (COO) after receiving unanimous approval from the company’s board, formally recognising the significance of his current responsibilities within the organisation.

Long will continue overseeing claims, operations, IT and customer functions while retaining his seat on the executive committee. In his expanded title, he will remain focused on maintaining an efficient and agile operating structure, upholding the service and claims standards associated with the Covéa brand, and supporting the company’s commitment to delivering strong Consumer Duty outcomes.

Now in his 25th year with Covéa Insurance, Long joined the business in 2001 as a graduate trainee and has since progressed through a variety of roles across the organisation, reflecting the company’s emphasis on internal career development.

Consilium strengthens international casualty team

Consilium has appointed Henrietta Burgess as partner – international casualty risk solutions as it continues to expand its international casualty offering.

Burgess brings close to 10 years of specialist casualty market experience and a strong background in handling complex international placements. She joins from BMS and has also held positions at Ambris, Gallagher and JLT Re. During her seven years at JLT Re, she developed expertise across life sciences, healthcare and casualty business in regions including Australia, Canada, the UK, Latin America and the Middle East.

Pro Legal appoints legal director for legacy business

Pro Legal has appointed Darren Goldthorpe as legal director – legacy with immediate effect.

Goldthorpe joins the specialist legal services provider with more than 20 years of experience across the legal and insurance sectors. He previously served as a partner at Kennedys, specialising in complex disease and illness claims, and has also held senior positions at DAC Beachcroft and BC Legal, where he helped lead teams managing high-volume and technically complex claims portfolios for insurer clients.

In his new position, Goldthorpe will oversee the growth and delivery of Pro Legal’s legacy services, working closely with insurers, MGAs and other stakeholders on complex run-off portfolios.

BIBA appoints regional manager for the North

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) has appointed Lesley Maxwell as regional manager North.

Maxwell will join the association on May 11 and will oversee strategic development and member relationships across Yorkshire, the North East, Scotland, the North West and Northern Ireland. Her responsibilities will include supporting existing and prospective members, promoting BIBA’s initiatives across the region and communicating members’ priorities back to the association.

Van Ameyde Marine names UK head of marine services

Van Ameyde Marine has appointed former Allseas executive Ben Sturrock as head of marine services for the UK.

Sturrock brings extensive experience in offshore and marine operations, having delivered complex projects across the oil and gas, renewable energy, shipping and loss-prevention sectors. His background includes expertise in marine warranty, oil spill response, casualty investigations and project cargo operations.

In the role, he will lead the company’s UK marine services division, oversee technical delivery, support major client relationships and help expand capabilities across marine assurance, surveying and offshore support services.
