St. John’s University’s Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science, part of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, will celebrate M. Steven DeCarlo, Executive Chair of Amwins, as the 2024 Insurance Leader of the Year. DeCarlo will be honored at the prestigious 29th Annual Insurance Leader of the Year Award Dinner.
M. Steven DeCarlo, who currently serves as Executive Chair of Amwins Group, Inc., previously held the role of Chief Executive Officer for 17 years. During his tenure, he played a key role in steering the company through significant expansion, including the successful merger of several specialty wholesale entities. He has been a member of the Amwins Board of Directors since joining the company in December 2000.
DeCarlo’s career began at Crum & Forster, after which he transitioned to The London Agency, now part of Chubb, where he served as Chief Financial Officer. He later co-founded Royal Specialty Underwriting, taking on the role of Executive Vice President and CFO. His industry trajectory led him to Royal & SunAlliance USA, where he served as Senior Vice President.
In 2009, DeCarlo was honored with Ernst & Young LLC’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the financial services category in the Carolinas, recognizing his leadership and innovation. His ongoing contributions to the insurance sector extend beyond business; he was also recognized by the National Insurance Industry Council’s Spirit of Life event for his efforts in raising over $2.7 million for City of Hope, a leading research center focused on life-threatening diseases.
The award dinner will be held on February 26, 2025, at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City, with proceeds supporting student programs and initiatives at the Greenberg School.
This honor is just the latest in a string for Amwins this year. In March, executive vice president and branch leader Andrea Dickinson was named one of Insurance Business’ Elite Women for 2024.
In the same month, Amwins was also selected as one of the top wholesale insurance brokers and MGAs in the US.
