Lloyd’s Cover Holder Kita Appoints The Insurance Head

Carbon insurance expert Kita, an approved Lloyd’s cover holder, has brought in Marsh McLennan alumnus James Kench to serve as head of insurance.

“I’ve always been a big fan of hyper-specialist insurance MGAs (managing general agents) for their agility, innovation, and ability to build deep specialist knowledge in their niche,” said Kench, whose career spans more than 14 years across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

“So, I’m extremely eager to join Lloyd’s cover holder Kita to help do just that in the fascinating and emerging climate tech realm of carbon insurance. I look forward to working closely with our broker and capacity partners and the broader carbon ecosystem as we de-risk and enable more carbon disposal projects worldwide.”

Kench’s credentials also include time spent at Mayer Brown and Jardine Matheson. His background is a mix of (re)insurance, law, finance, accounting, biology/chemistry, and insurance product development.

“We are thrilled that an insurance industry professional of James’ stature is on the Kita team,” commented Kita chief executive and co-founder Natalia Dorfman in an emailed release. “James will use his extensive insurance industry experience to accelerate Kita’s carbon insurance product development, thus helping greenlight more investment into high-quality carbon removal projects.”

The insurance head’s arrival comes hot on the heels of Kita’s oversubscribed £4 million seed round. Kita’s lead capacity is provided by Chaucer Group, followed by Munich Re Syndicate and RenaissanceRe.
