Markel Insurance Has Appointed Doan Nguyen As Managing Director

Markel Insurance has appointed Doan Nguyen as managing director of its specialty division in London, completing the latest phase of the company’s London Market leadership restructuring. The appointment fills the third divisional managing director position introduced as part of the insurer’s organisational changes launched in late 2025.

Nguyen joins Markel from Allianz Commercial, where she most recently served as global head of portfolio solutions. During her 12 years with Allianz, she also held senior positions including UK head of specialty and global head of specialty strategy. With more than 18 years of industry experience, she has built expertise across claims, underwriting, strategic planning, and portfolio management.

In her new position, Nguyen will oversee Markel’s specialty portfolio, including trade credit, political risk and surety, equine and livestock, international casualty, structured portfolio solutions, and political violence and terrorism. She will report to Rohan Davies, managing director of the London Market at Markel International, and will be based in London.

Leadership Restructuring Completed

Nguyen’s appointment follows the recent appointments of Dan McCarthy as managing director for marine, energy and construction, and Bhavik Desai as managing director for PFR and cyber. Together, the three appointments complete the divisional leadership structure established after Markel reorganised its international operations into five business units in late 2025. Under the new model, the London Market businesses—including marine and energy, PFR and cyber, and specialty—operate under a unified leadership framework.

Markel originally consolidated its specialty business lines in 2023 to bring together longer-tail insurance classes, simplify broker engagement, and create greater operational scale across previously separate underwriting teams. Rather than creating a new structure, Nguyen will lead this established division while bringing a different perspective shaped by her extensive portfolio management experience.

At Allianz Commercial, her work focused on portfolio-level risk transfer solutions instead of individual underwriting decisions. That background could influence how Markel develops structured insurance programmes for clients seeking integrated solutions that combine multiple risks and coverage lines into a single negotiated arrangement.

Specialty Market Outlook

The business lines under Nguyen’s leadership continue to face evolving market conditions. Trade credit insurance remains in demand as UK corporate insolvencies reached 2,343 cases in May 2026, while insurers have also reported an increase in late payment notifications across several industries in recent months.

Nguyen succeeds Tom Hillier, who was promoted to chief underwriting officer at Markel International earlier this year.

Markel Insurance operates as the insurance business of Markel Group Inc., which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Its London Market platform provides specialty and commercial insurance products through both the Lloyd’s market and company market operations.
