Allianz Commercial has appointed Emma Woolley as president, global specialty and UK region, a newly established position combining responsibility for the insurer’s global specialty business with its UK commercial operations.
The appointment remains subject to regulatory approval. Woolley is expected to join the Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE board of management and will report to Thomas Lillelund, chief executive of Allianz Commercial.
Woolley joins Allianz from Talbot Underwriting, AIG’s Lloyd’s specialty platform, where she currently serves as chief executive. She brings nearly three decades of insurance industry experience across executive leadership, underwriting, compliance, governance and broking.
Before joining Talbot, Woolley served as global head of marine at AIG. She previously spent almost six years with Lancashire Group, ultimately becoming chief executive of its Lloyd’s platform, Lancashire Syndicates.
Earlier in her career, Woolley held senior positions at Canopius Group, Swiss Re and BMS Group. She is expected to join Allianz after completing her current professional commitments, and no later than February 2027.
New role combines global specialty and UK commercial operations
In her new position, Woolley will oversee Allianz Commercial’s global specialty lines alongside its UK markets. She will work with regional presidents to support the expansion of the company’s specialty portfolio globally, while also collaborating with chief underwriting officer Vanessa Maxwell Neverton and chief distribution officer Jeremy Sharpe.
Combining responsibility for global specialty operations with a single national market creates an unusual leadership structure. The move highlights the strategic importance Allianz Commercial places on both areas, with specialty lines identified as a major growth opportunity and the UK remaining one of the company’s key commercial insurance markets worldwide.
Appointment adds to Allianz Commercial’s leadership expansion
Woolley’s appointment follows a series of senior leadership developments at Allianz Commercial since Lillelund became chief executive of both AGCS and Allianz Commercial in early 2025.
Lillelund joined from AIG Europe, Middle East and Africa and has more than 25 years of insurance industry experience, including senior roles involving Aspen Re, Gen Re and Swiss Re.
Since his appointment, Allianz Commercial has continued to strengthen its senior leadership structure, including the separate appointment of a head of client relationship management for its mid-market business.
Woolley’s move also reflects the movement of senior insurance talent across the specialty and Lloyd’s markets. During her career, she has held leadership roles with AIG, Lancashire, Canopius, Swiss Re and BMS Group, several of which operate in areas that compete directly with Allianz Commercial in the specialty insurance sector.
What the appointment could mean for brokers
For brokers placing specialty risks with Allianz Commercial, as well as those operating across the broader UK commercial insurance market, the combined leadership structure could create a more integrated approach to complex placements.
Having one senior executive responsible for both global specialty and the UK market could help bring greater alignment to cross-border specialty risks that also involve Allianz’s UK portfolio, rather than having regional and product-focused leaders make decisions separately.
Woolley’s experience in marine insurance at AIG and her leadership of two Lloyd’s platforms also gives her direct experience with complex specialty risks traded internationally.
The creation of a combined global specialty and UK leadership position, rather than maintaining separate responsibilities, indicates that Allianz Commercial sees increasing connections between its global specialty growth strategy and its UK commercial business. The structure also reflects the important role played by the London Market and UK-based placement channels in globally traded specialty insurance.
