Sompo International has appointed Stephen Barr as the new head of marine and energy liability insurance in the London Market.
Before joining Sompo International, Barr served as the European head of marine insurance at CNA/Hardy. His background includes roles as an underwriter and broker at renowned firms such as Talbot, Hiscox, and Sedgwick. Additionally, he assumed the position of vice chair of the International Union of Marine Insurance’s executive committee in 2022.
Barr will be based in the company’s London office and will report directly to Paul Ashworth, who serves as the head of aviation, energy, and marine in the London Market.
Commenting on the appointment, Ashworth highlighted Barr’s experience and how he will contribute to Sompo International’s “well-established” marine and energy insurance capability within the London specialty market.
“With the ongoing expansion of our UK business, supporting the company’s overall growth strategy, Stephen’s depth of experience and insight will be an asset as we explore new opportunities and further develop bespoke solutions for our broker partners’ and clients’ evolving needs,” Ashworth said in a news release.
In October, Sompo International announced two senior middle-market appointments. Jon Pope was named middle-market insurance head for the London region, while Toby Harris joined as technology head for middle-market insurance.
